Community Based Instruction (CBI) Program

The Spring ISD Community Based Instruction (CBI) program is designed to teach functional, age appropriate, skills to students with significant cognitive impairments and other significant developmental disabilities within inclusive school and community settings. The design of this program is to provide an alternative curriculum which enhances the independent living and self care skills of the student. Although this curriculum focuses on functional academics it is also meant to prepare the student to lead successful and personally fulfilling lives as adults.

 

The purposes of community-based instruction include, but are not limited to:

·         Teaching skills necessary to access community facilities and services

·         Preparing students to perform “real work” in a variety of integrated work environments, including the student’s campus

·         Assisting students in utilizing their free time creatively and constructively

·         Developing age-appropriate, “real-life” functional and academic skills in reading, writing and mathematics.

 

Qualifying Descriptors:

·         Significant cognitive disability

·         Significant limitation in adaptive behaviors in the following skill areas: communication, self-care, social/interpersonal skills, and functional academic skills.

         Formal assessment data and functional data that supports that the student requires an alternate curriculum to benefit from instruction

 

Description of Support

·          Provide opportunities to access an alternative curriculum within an inclusive school   and community environment.

·         Provide a structured and stimulating classroom environment

·         Provide developmentally appropriate pre-academic and functional academic learning activities

·         Provide hands-on learning activities

·         Provide pre-vocational and vocational training

·         Provide supports for transitioning skills learned at school to the home and community environments
